    How to Measure an Opening for Sliding Doors: A Step-by-Step Guide

    The importance of installing your sliding doors correctly can’t be understated. A quality installation can make a huge difference between a functional door that looks clean and fits with your space, compared to one that might not slide all the way and looks uneven with the rest of your space. 

    Whether you’re working with suspended or bottom-rolling sliding door systems, following a detailed measuring process ensures the doors will align perfectly, fit snugly, and function properly. Read on to see how you can accurately measure the opening of your space before installing your sliding doors to have a successful DIY project.

    1. Measure the Width in Three Places

    Sliding door openings can vary in size, depending on the material used and the measurements of your space. That’s why taking multiple measurements across the width is crucial. Measure the width at three points: the top, middle, and bottom of the opening.

    • Why three measurements? Walls can bow, or framing can be uneven, causing discrepancies in width. By taking three measurements, you can identify if there’s any variance in the dimensions.
    • Which width to use? For sliding doors, always use the largest width. This helps to account for overlaps between the sliding panels and hide any minor differences in width.

    2. Measure the Height in Three Places

    Next, measure the height of the opening in three spots: on the left, right, and center. This step helps ensure the door fits snugly from top to bottom.

    • Why take three height measurements? Just like the width, the height of the opening can vary due to uneven flooring, ceilings, or framing. A small difference can have a huge impact, so double and triple check everything if you’re unsure. 
    • Which height to use? For height, always use the smallest measurement. This allows for easy adjustments during installation, ensuring you can lift the door and adjust it to fit properly.

    3. Check the Levels of the Floor, Ceiling, and Walls

    • Why use a laser level? While your initial measurements might appear correct, openings may be slightly uneven or skewed. A laser level helps reveal these irregularities, allowing you to make any necessary adjustments to the framing or setting expectations for the final result.

    Measuring the opening for your sliding doors requires patience and accuracy. Take your time when measuring and check your work a few times if you’re unsure.
